about

Francisco Goya's Black Paintings are a testament to the artist's inner turmoil during his final years. Born from his inner fears and his dark vision of humanity, as a frightening portrait of madness, despair and existential anguish. Created at his home, Quinta del Sordo, they were not intended for the public, but rather served as a deeply personal exploration of Goya's own psychological struggles and anxieties.

He delved into the depths of suffering and the darkest aspects of the human psyche. These works offer viewers a profound glimpse into the mind of a tormented genius with their raw emotional power and lasting relevance.

The Black Paintings reflect Goya's acute awareness of panic, terror and hysteria, showing the tumultuous political and social landscape of the time. They are now housed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
